About the book

A field guide to the world next door: its scenery, its seven subdivisions, and a complete census of its inhabitants from the recently dead to nature-spirits and thought-forms. Leadbeater writes like a naturalist who happens to be describing the invisible.

The first thing Leadbeater wants settled is not what the astral plane looks like but whether it is there at all. His answer is flat: its objects and inhabitants are real in exactly the way your body, your furniture and your house are real. Or, borrowing a phrase from an early Theosophical book, as real as Charing Cross.

He is careful about which kind of real he means. His tradition can call everything except the One Unmanifested unreal, because everything else passes away. He sets that lofty sense aside and uses the word the way anyone would.

So astral things do not last forever. Neither do houses. While they last, they are "realities which we cannot afford to ignore", however few people are aware of them yet.
