About the book

The yoga of knowledge, delivered as lectures in London and New York: maya, the real nature of man, the Absolute, and Vedanta made practical for people who think for a living. Vivekananda's biggest philosophical statement, still warm from the lecture hall.

A book of lectures written for people who need reasons opens with a song. Thirteen stanzas, and every one of them ends on the same cry: “Om tat sat, Om!” Roughly: Om, That alone is real.

The song is addressed to a sannyasin, a wandering monk who has given up everything. Read quickly, it sounds like a rulebook for leaving the world: no home, no possessions, no ties.

It is something bigger than that. Nearly every idea the lectures go on to argue for is already here, pressed into verse. The monk is simply the sharpest picture of it. What the song really describes is a freedom that is already yours, and what a person does once she stops doubting it.
