A polished smile can be produced on command. Cheiro begins from the suspicion that expression is performative: “the face can wear a mask,” especially when someone wants employment, trust, or advantage.
The hand, he argues, is less obedient to the moment. Its proportions, texture, joints, and lines cannot be rearranged merely to please an observer. For Cheiro, this makes the hand a record of settled character, while the face may display the role currently being played.
That contrast supports his entire method. Palmistry begins not with supernatural spectacle, but with the claim that durable bodily features disclose what a temporary expression can conceal.
