Before a single verse, the title page tells you what kind of book this is. It calls itself chosen fragments from the Book of the Golden Precepts, "for the daily use of Lanoos (disciples)."

Daily use. Not for study, not for a shelf of important books. The word Lanoo is simply a disciple, a person in training, and the book assumes you are one the moment you open it.

That changes what counts as reading it well. A novel is read once and finished. A handbook for disciples is used, not finished: you pick it up in the morning, take one instruction into the day, and come back to it tomorrow to find it has quietly changed shape.
