The sign is an adverb
The relationship is straightforward once stated. The planet supplies a function. The sign supplies the manner in which that function is carried out.
Mars signifies assertion. In every chart, in every sign, Mars is about assertion. What the sign changes is the style: direct or oblique, fast or sustained, blunt or strategic.
A sign never converts a planet into something else. Venus in a difficult sign is still Venus, conducting itself differently.
This is the guard against the commonest beginner error, which is reading a placement as though the sign were the subject. Mercury in Pisces is not a description of Pisces. It is a description of how this person thinks, with Pisces supplying the adverb.
Do not memorise 120 entries
The practical method, and it is what separates people who can read a chart from people who look things up.
Every sign is defined by exactly two properties: an element and a mode. Four elements times three modes gives twelve, and each sign is a unique pairing.
So a planet in a sign is generated rather than recalled. Take the planet's function, apply the element's register, apply the mode's relationship to change, and the reading assembles itself.
This is how experienced astrologers work, and it is why they can read placements they have never specifically studied. It also means a wrong reading is usually a reasoning error you can find rather than a fact you failed to learn.
The four elements
The element describes the register a sign operates in.
Fire covers Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Read as active, immediate, expressive and self-starting. A planet in a fire sign acts first and often outwardly.
Earth covers Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Read as practical, material, methodical and concerned with results. A planet in an earth sign wants the thing to work.
Air covers Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Read as mental, social, communicative and concerned with ideas and relation. A planet in an air sign thinks about it and talks about it.
Water covers Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Read as emotional, instinctive, receptive and concerned with depth and connection. A planet in a water sign feels its way.
The elements are also grouped into two broader pairings in traditional practice: fire with air, and earth with water, which is one reason signs of those groupings are read as compatible.
The three modes
The mode, also called quadruplicity or quality, describes how a sign relates to change. It maps onto the seasons, which is where it came from.
Cardinal covers Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, the signs that begin each season. Read as initiating, starting things, taking the first step. A planet in a cardinal sign begins.
Fixed covers Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, the signs in the middle of each season. Read as sustaining, persistent, resistant to change. A planet in a fixed sign holds.
Mutable covers Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs at the end of each season. Read as adapting, transitional, flexible. A planet in a mutable sign adjusts.
The seasonal derivation is worth noticing, because it is a genuine structural logic rather than an arbitrary assignment. Beginnings, middles and endings of seasons, mapped onto beginning, sustaining and changing.

Building a reading from the parts
The method in practice, worked through.
Take Mercury in Capricorn. Mercury is thinking and communicating. Capricorn is cardinal earth: initiating, practical, structural. So: thought that is practical, structured, oriented to results, and willing to start. Astrologers read it as a serious, organised, somewhat cautious mind that wants the idea to be usable.
Take Venus in Gemini. Venus is attraction and value. Gemini is mutable air: adaptable, mental, communicative. So: attraction that is mentally driven, variable, interested in exchange. Read as valuing conversation and variety, drawn to what is interesting.
Take Mars in Taurus. Mars is assertion. Taurus is fixed earth: sustained, material, stable. So: assertion that is slow to start, persistent once started, and difficult to divert. Read as steady rather than quick, and stubborn under pressure.
Three placements, none memorised, all generated. That is the entire technique, and once you have it the hundred and twenty combinations stop being a problem.
