About the book

Allen's first book, and really two: The Path of Prosperity, on thinking your way out of undesirable conditions, and The Way of Peace, on meditation as the road in. As a Man Thinketh is this book compressed; here is the full argument with the quiet parts included.

You know the pattern even if you have never named it. Something hurts, and you reach for whatever makes it stop: a drink, a fortune, a name for yourself, a beautiful private world where the world's sorrows can't get in, a religion kept mostly as ritual.

Allen lists exactly these escapes, and he does not sneer at them. He grants that they work. For a while the soul is lulled into a sweet sense of safety. Then illness comes, or a great loss, or a temptation stronger than the arrangement, and the whole fabric tears.

His image for it is the sword of Damocles, hanging over every personal joy and ready to fall on anyone unprotected by knowledge. Not unprotected by money, or luck, or faith. By knowledge. That one word is where the book begins.
