You catch yourself wanting the same thing for years: a different kind of work, a steadier mind, a home that finally feels like yours. Most of us treat that kind of wanting as noise, a restlessness to be managed.

Marden opens the book by refusing that verdict. Our heart longings, he says, are more than vapourings of the imagination. They are prophecies and forerunners, indicators of our possibilities, and they measure how high a person is actually able to aim.

The line he opens the chapter with carries the whole argument: “Whatever the soul is taught to expect, that it will build.” Notice the verb. The soul does not simply receive what it expects. It builds it.
