Rabindranath Tagore · 1913

About the book

The Nobel laureate's eight meditations on the Upanishads he was raised in: the individual and the universe, the problem of self, realisation in love and in action. Tagore wrote the English himself, and it reads like morning light — the gentlest serious book on this shelf.

Tagore opens with an odd observation about bricks. The civilisation of ancient Greece grew up inside city walls, and so, he says, did nearly every modern one. Walls do not stay in the stone. They move into the mind.

A walled mind secures what it has by fortifying it and keeping it apart. It sets up divide and rule in our mental outlook: nation against nation, one kind of knowledge against another, man against nature. Whatever lies beyond the barrier is met with suspicion, and has to fight its way into our recognition.

You know this habit from the inside. It is the reflex that files a new person as a threat until proven otherwise, or keeps work, family and the weather in separate sealed rooms, each defended against the others.
