Chesed is the fourth of the ten sephirot and the first of the seven lower ones: loving-kindness, giving without limit, the outward flow that the rest of the Tree has to shape. This page keeps two traditions apart — Jewish Kabbalah, where the sephirot come from, and the Hermetic Qabalah of the 19th century, which added angels, planets and tarot cards.
What does Chesed mean?
Chesed (חסד) is one of the richest words in the Hebrew Bible — kindness, loyal love, grace — and no single English word covers it. Psalm 89:3 says olam chesed yibaneh, "the world is built by kindness", and Kabbalists read Chesed as the first movement of that building: giving that does not wait to be earned.
Its other name is Gedulah, greatness, from 1 Chronicles 29:11, a verse that ascribes to God greatness, power, glory, victory and majesty. The Hebrew of that list names Gedulah, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach and Hod in order, and the verse is sung in synagogue as the Torah scroll is carried through the congregation.
Chesed on the Tree of Life
Chesed stands on the Pillar of Mercy, below Chokhmah and above Netzach, facing Gevurah across the Tree. The two are the Tree's central tension: Chesed without Gevurah is boundless giving with no form to hold it, and Tiferet is what each becomes when the other tempers it.
Four paths touch Chesed on the familiar Western diagram: from Chokhmah above, across to Gevurah, and down to Tiferet and Netzach. Sefer Yetzirah ties the 22 paths to the 22 Hebrew letters, but it never says which letter joins which pair of sephirot; that wiring is a much later construction, and versions of it disagree.
Chesed in Jewish Kabbalah
- Divine name. Chesed is paired with El (אל), "God", one of the shortest divine names in the Bible, at the head of the seven lower sephirot.
- Abraham. Among the patriarchs Chesed belongs to Abraham, whose hospitality to strangers in Genesis 18 made him the model of kindness. In the custom of ushpizin, the guests welcomed into the sukkah, Abraham is invited on the first night of Sukkot.
- Partzuf. In the Lurianic system of the 16th century Chesed is the first of six sephirot, Chesed to Yesod, that together form Ze'ir Anpin, the Small Face. The Tikkunei Zohar's passage Patach Eliyahu calls Chesed the right arm.
Chesed opens the best-known practice built on the sephirot. During Sefirat ha-Omer, the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot, the first week is the week of Chesed, and each day pairs it with another quality: day two is Gevurah within Chesed. Cordovero's Tomer Devorah gives Chesed a chapter on love of God and kindness toward others.
Everything in the second half of the panel is Hermetic, not Jewish. Archangels, planets, colour scales, virtues and tarot cards on the sephirot come from Western occultism — Renaissance occult philosophy, then Éliphas Lévi in the 1850s and the Golden Dawn after 1888. They are a consistent system — and a later overlay on a medieval Jewish structure.
Chesed in Hermetic Qabalah
The Golden Dawn, founded in 1888, kept the spelling Chesed and often used the title Gedulah. Its archangel is Tzadkiel; its sphere is Jupiter, Tzedeq; its Queen-scale colour is blue. Dion Fortune's The Mystical Qabalah (1935) gives the virtue obedience and a long list of vices — bigotry, hypocrisy, gluttony, tyranny — and the magical image of a mighty crowned and throned king.
In tarot the four Fours sit on Chesed: the Four of Wands, Four of Cups, Four of Swords and Four of Pentacles. Book T, the Golden Dawn's tarot manuscript, titles them Perfected Work, Blended Pleasure, Rest from Strife and Earthly Power — stability, in four registers. The paths from Chesed carry The Hierophant (Vav), Strength (Teth), The Hermit (Yod) and The Wheel of Fortune (Kaph).
Chesed in meditation and practice
The Jewish practice of Chesed is ethical before it is contemplative: gemilut chasadim, acts of loving-kindness, which Mishnah Avot 1:2 names as one of the three things the world stands on. Modern Omer guides use the week of Chesed for self-examination — where one's giving is generous, and where it has lost its boundaries.
In the Golden Dawn grade system Chesed is Adeptus Exemptus, 7=4, the highest grade of the order's inner Second Order. Hermetic meditation on Chesed typically builds its magical image, Fortune's throned king, in the sphere's blue, and holds it while reflecting on the virtue assigned to it.
