Gevurah is the fifth of the ten sephirot: strength as restraint, the power to judge, to limit and to say no. It is the counterweight to Chesed, and the Tree does not work without it. This page keeps two traditions apart — Jewish Kabbalah, where the sephirot come from, and the Hermetic Qabalah of the 19th century, which added angels, planets and tarot cards.
What does Gevurah mean?
Gevurah (גבורה) means strength or might, from the same root as gibor, a hero. Rabbinic ethics had already turned the word inward: "Who is mighty? One who conquers his inclination" (Mishnah Avot 4:1). In Kabbalah Gevurah is the strength of limitation — the force that draws a boundary, measures and judges.
Its other names show the same face. Din (דין) is judgement; Pachad (פחד), fear, comes from Pachad Yitzchak, "the Fear of Isaac", a name for God in Genesis 31:42. None of them means cruelty. Severity cut off from mercy turns cruel, the tradition warns — but mercy cut off from severity dissolves into nothing.
Gevurah on the Tree of Life
Gevurah stands on the Pillar of Severity, below Binah and above Hod, facing Chesed across the Tree. Chesed gives; Gevurah decides how much, and to whom. Tiferet, below and between them, holds the two in balance. Diagrams mirror left and right, so learn the pillar by Binah at its head.
Four paths touch Gevurah on the familiar Western diagram: from Binah above, across to Chesed, and down to Tiferet and Hod. Sefer Yetzirah ties the 22 paths to the 22 Hebrew letters, but it never says which letter joins which pair of sephirot; that wiring is a much later construction, and versions of it disagree.
Gevurah in Jewish Kabbalah
- Divine name. Gevurah is paired with Elohim (אלהים). The midrash already reads Elohim as God's attribute of justice, middat ha-din, and YHVH as the attribute of mercy, so the name fits the sephirah of judgement.
- Isaac. Among the patriarchs Gevurah belongs to Isaac, bound on the altar in Genesis 22 and remembered through the "Fear of Isaac". In the custom of ushpizin on Sukkot he is the guest of the second night.
- Partzuf. In the Lurianic system of the 16th century Gevurah is part of Ze'ir Anpin, the Small Face, formed by the six sephirot from Chesed to Yesod. The Tikkunei Zohar's passage Patach Eliyahu calls Gevurah the left arm, opposite Chesed on the right.
The second week of Sefirat ha-Omer, the count between Passover and Shavuot, is the week of Gevurah. Moses Cordovero's Tomer Devorah (16th century), which teaches each sephirah as a trait to imitate, treats Gevurah as the discipline of restraining one's own evil inclination.
Everything in the second half of the panel is Hermetic, not Jewish. Archangels, planets, colour scales, virtues and tarot cards on the sephirot come from Western occultism — Renaissance occult philosophy, then Éliphas Lévi in the 1850s and the Golden Dawn after 1888. They are a consistent system — and a later overlay on a medieval Jewish structure.
Gevurah in Hermetic Qabalah
The Golden Dawn, founded in 1888, spelled the name Geburah and kept Din and Pachad among its titles. Its archangel is Khamael; its sphere is Mars, Madim; its Queen-scale colour is scarlet red. Dion Fortune's The Mystical Qabalah (1935) gives the virtue energy and courage, the vices cruelty and destruction, and the magical image of a mighty warrior in his chariot.
In tarot the four Fives sit on Geburah: the Five of Wands, Five of Cups, Five of Swords and Five of Pentacles. Book T, the Golden Dawn's tarot manuscript, titles them Strife, Loss in Pleasure, Defeat and Material Trouble — the one rank in which every card names a difficulty. The paths from Geburah carry The Chariot (Cheth), Strength (Teth), Justice (Lamed) and The Hanged Man (Mem).
Gevurah in meditation and practice
In Jewish practice Gevurah is trained rather than visualised. The mussar tradition of ethical discipline works on exactly the quality Avot 4:1 describes, and modern Omer guides use the week of Gevurah to ask where one's judgement is fair and where it has hardened into harshness toward others or oneself.
In the Golden Dawn grade system Geburah is Adeptus Major, 6=5, within the order's inner Second Order. Hermetic meditation on Geburah builds Fortune's armed charioteer in scarlet and uses it to work with anger, courage and the need for decisive action — force that is disciplined rather than suppressed.

What does Gevurah mean?

Is Gevurah a negative sephirah?
No. Gevurah is judgement, limit and discipline, which Kabbalah treats as necessary. It turns harmful only when cut off from Chesed: severity without mercy becomes cruelty, just as mercy without severity dissolves into nothing. Tiferet holds the two together.
