Tiferet is the sixth of the ten sephirot and the centre of the Tree of Life: beauty as balance, the place where loving-kindness and severity meet and become compassion. On the familiar diagram more paths touch it than any other sephirah. This page keeps two traditions apart — Jewish Kabbalah, where the sephirot come from, and the Hermetic Qabalah of the 19th century, which added angels, planets and tarot cards.
What does Tiferet mean?
Tiferet (תפארת) means beauty, glory or splendour, and it stands in 1 Chronicles 29:11 between greatness and victory. The beauty it names is not ornament but proportion: a harmony in which opposing forces are both present and neither wins outright.
Its other names describe the same balance. It is Rachamim, compassion — mercy that has passed through judgement. It is linked with Emet, truth, from Micah 7:20, where truth is given to Jacob as kindness is to Abraham. In the Zohar Tiferet is also "the Holy One, blessed be He", the divine partner of the Shekhinah, and it is associated with the Written Torah.
Tiferet on the Tree of Life
Tiferet sits on the Middle Pillar, below Keter and above Yesod, between Chesed on one side and Gevurah on the other. It is the heart of the six sephirot from Chesed to Yesod, which Lurianic Kabbalah reads as a single face, and the pivot between the upper and lower Tree.
Eight paths touch Tiferet on the familiar Western diagram: from Keter, Chokhmah and Binah above, from Chesed and Gevurah at its sides, and down to Netzach, Hod and Yesod. Sefer Yetzirah ties the 22 paths to the 22 Hebrew letters, but it never says which letter joins which pair of sephirot; that wiring is a much later construction, and versions of it disagree.
Tiferet in Jewish Kabbalah
- Divine name. Tiferet is paired with the four-letter name YHVH (יהוה), which Jewish practice does not pronounce: in prayer it is read Adonai, and in ordinary speech many say Hashem, "the Name".
- Jacob. Among the patriarchs Tiferet belongs to Jacob, who holds together Abraham's kindness and Isaac's strength. In the custom of ushpizin on Sukkot he is the guest of the third night.
- Partzuf. In the Lurianic system of the 16th century Tiferet is the centre of Ze'ir Anpin, the Small Face. The Tikkunei Zohar's passage Patach Eliyahu calls it the torso, between the two arms of Chesed and Gevurah.
Tiferet's union with Malkhut appears in a formula many Jews still say. Before certain prayers and commandments — the counting of the Omer among them — many prayer books print le-shem yichud, "for the sake of the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekhinah": in Kabbalistic terms, of Tiferet and Malkhut. The third week of Sefirat ha-Omer is the week of Tiferet.
Everything in the second half of the panel is Hermetic, not Jewish. Archangels, planets, colour scales, virtues and tarot cards on the sephirot come from Western occultism — Renaissance occult philosophy, then Éliphas Lévi in the 1850s and the Golden Dawn after 1888. They are a consistent system — and a later overlay on a medieval Jewish structure.
Tiferet in Hermetic Qabalah
The Golden Dawn, founded in 1888, spelled the name Tiphareth and made it the hinge of its whole system. Its sphere is the Sun, Shemesh; its Queen-scale colour is yellow, often painted gold. The Golden Dawn tables, Crowley's Liber 777 and Dion Fortune give the archangel Raphael, but some later lists swap Raphael and Michael between Tiphareth and Hod. Fortune's virtue is devotion to the Great Work; its vice is pride.
In tarot the four Sixes sit on Tiphareth: the Six of Wands, Six of Cups, Six of Swords and Six of Pentacles. Eight Majors stand on its paths: The High Priestess (Gimel), The Emperor (Heh), The Lovers (Zayin), The Hermit (Yod), Justice (Lamed), Death (Nun), Temperance (Samekh) and The Devil (Ayin).
Tiferet in meditation and practice
In Jewish practice Tiferet is a model of integration more than an object of meditation: conduct that holds kindness and judgement together and stays truthful while doing it. The le-shem yichud formula turns ordinary commandments into acts aimed at that inner harmony, and modern Omer guides use Tiferet's week to examine it.
Tiphareth is the heart of the Middle Pillar exercise popularised by Israel Regardie in the 1930s: after drawing light down from above the head, the practitioner forms a golden sphere at the chest and vibrates the name YHVH Eloah va-Daath. In the Golden Dawn it is also the grade of Adeptus Minor, 5=6, the entrance to the order's inner Second Order.

Why is Tiferet at the centre of the Tree?
Because it balances the two outer pillars. Chesed gives without limit and Gevurah restrains; Tiferet is where each tempers the other. On the Western diagram it is also the crossroads, joined by paths to every sephirah except Malkhut.
Which tarot cards belong to Tiphareth?
In Hermetic Qabalah the four Sixes sit on Tiphareth, and eight Majors stand on its paths, from the High Priestess to the Devil. These are Golden Dawn attributions from the 19th century, not part of Jewish Kabbalah.
Is the archangel of Tiphareth Raphael or Michael?
Both appear. The Golden Dawn, Crowley's Liber 777 and Dion Fortune give Raphael to Tiphareth and Michael to Hod; some later lists reverse them. Either way this is Hermetic Qabalah — Jewish Kabbalah does not assign archangels this way.
