You open a message that says "we need to talk." Your stomach tightens before a single further detail exists.
Not after considering what it might mean. Before. The physical response arrives, and then, a beat later, your mind supplies an account of what is wrong.
That sequence is the interesting part, and most people have it backwards. The explanation feels like the cause of the feeling. It is usually the other way round.
The gap between the reaction and the reason
Three ordinary examples, all with the same shape.
You read a text and instantly feel hurt, before working out which part of it was hurtful.
You buy something online after a stressful day, and then, twenty minutes later, explain the purchase to yourself.
Someone says "we need to talk" and your body responds before any information has arrived.
In each case there is a gap: the reaction comes first, the reason comes second. The reason feels like it produced the reaction. It did not. It was assembled afterwards to account for something that had already happened.
Your reaction starts before your conscious explanation does. The explanation is not the cause, it is the report.
This matters practically because if you believe the explanation caused the feeling, you will argue with the explanation. That does not work, because the feeling did not come from there.
Two speeds, and why the fast one goes first
The standard account of this describes two systems operating at different speeds, popularised by Daniel Kahneman in Thinking, Fast and Slow as System 1 and System 2.
The fast system is automatic, effortless, always running, and works by pattern matching. It produces impressions, intuitions and immediate emotional responses without any sense of deliberate effort.
The slow system is deliberate, effortful, and can only attend to one thing at a time. It is what you experience as thinking.
The fast system goes first because it is built for speed rather than accuracy. In an environment where some situations were genuinely dangerous, a rapid approximate response beat a slow accurate one. It is still doing that job, applied to text messages.
Worth a caveat, since this framework is often oversold: the two-system description is a useful model rather than a map of two separate structures in the brain, and Kahneman himself presented it as a convenient fiction. Parts of the wider literature it draws on, particularly some priming research, have had replication problems. The general finding that fast automatic processing precedes deliberate evaluation is well supported. The tidy two-box picture is a simplification.

Why your explanation arrives second and feels first
The uncomfortable part is not that the fast process exists. It is that the explanation your slow process produces is frequently wrong, and arrives with complete confidence.
There is a body of work on this. Studies of confabulation, in which people confidently explain choices they did not actually make, suggest that the mind's account-giving function operates somewhat independently of the mechanism that produced the behaviour. In one well-known line of research, participants given a reason to believe they had made a particular choice would generate detailed justifications for a preference they had not expressed.
The conclusion is not that people are dishonest. It is that explaining is a separate process from deciding, and it runs afterwards using whatever material is available.
Applied to daily life: when you feel a surge of irritation and immediately know why, the knowing is a hypothesis presented as a memory. Sometimes it is correct. It is not evidence.
The practical implication is a small but genuine shift. "I am angry because he dismissed what I said" becomes "I am angry, and my first explanation is that he dismissed what I said." The second version is accurate and leaves room to check.
A worked example: four words and a stomach drop
The message says "we need to talk." Four words, no further information.
What happens in the first two seconds. The body responds. Stomach tightens, heart rate rises slightly, attention narrows. This is complete before any conscious thought about content, because there is no content.
What happens next. The slow process arrives to a situation already in progress and does what it does: it explains. It reaches for candidate reasons. Something is wrong. He has been distant. This is about last weekend.
What happens then. Having produced an explanation, the fast process now has something to work with, and the pattern deepens. Irritation joins the anxiety, because if this is about last weekend then it is unfair. A reply gets composed: "say it now then."
What was actually happening. He wanted to discuss whether to go to his brother's wedding.
Trace the sequence. The body reacted to a pattern, four words that in past experience preceded something bad. The mind explained the reaction using available material. The explanation generated further feeling. A reply was sent that will now itself require managing.
Nothing in that chain was irrational given the previous step. The whole sequence was set in motion by a pattern match to something that had nothing to do with this message.
Where the damage happens. Not in the reaction, which is involuntary and harmless. In the action taken while the explanation still feels like fact. Almost every regretted message, remark or decision in this category was sent during the window when a reconstruction felt like knowledge.
What actually triggers the fast process
Pattern similarity rather than actual content, which is why the intensity so often does not fit the event.
Common triggers, none of which are about the present situation:
Structural resemblance to something older. A tone, a phrase, a sequence that resembles a previous experience. The match does not need to be close, and it operates below awareness.
Ambiguity. Situations with missing information are filled by the fast process, which fills them with whatever is most available, usually whatever you are already concerned about.
Physical state. Tiredness, hunger, illness and stress all lower the threshold at which the fast process fires and reduce the slow process's capacity to intervene. This is unglamorous and it explains a large share of disproportionate reactions.
Accumulated load. Several small unresolved things make the next small thing land as though it were large, because the response is to the accumulation rather than to the item.
The useful diagnostic: when intensity exceeds what the situation warrants, the reaction is probably not about this situation. That is not a reason to dismiss the feeling. It is a reason to be cautious about the explanation attached to it.

Why you cannot think your way out of it
The instinct on learning about this is to try to catch the reaction before it happens. That does not work, and understanding why saves a lot of frustration.

Nor can you reason it away once it has fired. Telling yourself the reaction is disproportionate does not remove it, because the reaction was not produced by reasoning and is not addressable by it. This is why being told to calm down is useless and mildly infuriating.
What you can affect is the interval afterwards. The fast process produces a state. The slow process then decides what to do with it. That second part is where agency lives, and it is a much smaller and more achievable target than preventing the reaction.
This reframes the goal usefully. Not fewer reactions, which is not available. Fewer actions taken while a reconstruction feels like fact.
What you can do in the gap
Five things, in rough order of practicality.
Name the state without the explanation. "Something just landed badly" rather than "he is being dismissive." The first is accurate. The second is a hypothesis you are about to act on.
Do not act while the explanation feels certain. The confidence is a feature of the reconstruction, not evidence of its accuracy. Certainty arriving instantly is a reason for caution rather than for action.
Buy a short interval. Not an hour, which is unrealistic. Ninety seconds. Enough for the physiological component to begin subsiding, after which the explanation frequently looks different.
Check the intensity against the event. If the reaction is larger than the situation warrants, treat that as information about the pattern rather than about the person in front of you.
Ask what else it could be. Generating a second explanation does not require believing it. Simply producing an alternative loosens the grip of the first one, which is often the whole benefit.

When this is more than a fast reaction
Everything above describes ordinary automatic processing in ordinary circumstances.
Some experiences are not that, and are worth taking to a professional rather than managing with a framework. Reactions that are frequent, intense and disproportionate in a way that is affecting your work, sleep or relationships. Responses that include flashbacks, dissociation, or a sense of being somewhere other than the present. Anxiety that persists rather than spiking and settling. And any pattern that connects to experiences that are painful to examine.
These are not failures of technique and they do not respond well to self-directed work. A therapist or a doctor is the appropriate step, and the difference between a fast reaction and something that needs support is usually persistence and degree of interference rather than intensity in a single moment.
If any of that is familiar, it is worth speaking to someone rather than treating it as a skill to be improved.
What to take from this

Two processes run at different speeds. The fast one cannot be switched off and the slow one is frequently not engaged at all.
Reconstructions arrive with confidence, and the confidence is not evidence. "I am angry, and my first explanation is X" is more accurate than "I am angry because X."
You cannot prevent the reaction. You can affect what happens in the ninety seconds afterwards, and that is where almost all the available benefit sits.

Does this mean my feelings are not valid?
No. The feeling is real and worth attending to. What is unreliable is the explanation attached to it, which is generated afterwards and presented with confidence. Taking the feeling seriously and treating the explanation as a hypothesis are compatible.
How long does the physical part take to settle?
It varies, and a useful working figure is that the acute physiological component of a strong reaction begins subsiding within a minute or two if nothing is added to it. Rehearsing the explanation adds to it, which is why replaying keeps it going far longer.
Is the fast and slow thinking model accurate?
It is a useful model rather than a literal description of two systems, and Kahneman presented it that way. Some of the surrounding research, particularly parts of the priming literature, has had replication problems. The core observation, that automatic processing precedes deliberate evaluation, is well supported.
Can you train yourself to react less?
Not to react less, but to act less on the first explanation. That is a genuine and trainable difference, and it usually shows up first as noticing afterwards, then noticing during, which is the ordinary progression.
