The distinction is learnable, and it is worth learning early, because the cost of getting it wrong is measured in years rather than weeks.
Why do two people with equal effort end up so far apart?
Because skills do not all behave the same way over time.
Some skills depreciate. The specific software, the current framework, the process that this employer happens to use. They are valuable now and they lose value steadily, because the thing they attach to is itself being replaced.
Some skills compound. Having them makes the next skill faster to acquire, and each addition raises the value of everything already in the stack rather than sitting beside it.
Effort spent on the first kind produces a treadmill: real competence, continuously eroding, requiring constant replacement just to stay level. Effort spent on the second produces a base that everything else attaches to.
A depreciating skill is something you have. A compounding skill is something that makes the next thing easier. Ten years of the first leaves you where you started, working harder.
What makes a skill compound rather than depreciate?
Three properties, and a skill needs all three.
It transfers. The skill remains useful when the domain, employer or technology changes. Writing clearly is useful in every field. Configuring one particular system is useful in the places that use it.
It accelerates learning. Having the skill makes acquiring other skills faster. Understanding statistics makes every empirical field more accessible. Knowing how to run a project makes every new domain easier to operate in, because the shape of the work is familiar even when the content is not.
It scales with scope. The skill becomes more valuable as your responsibility grows rather than being superseded. Judgment about which problems matter is worth more at every level. Execution speed on a specific task is worth roughly the same forever, and eventually stops being what you are paid for.
A skill with all three compounds. A skill with one or two is worth having and will need replacing.
The three categories, and how to sort your own

The trap is that tool skills produce the fastest visible reward. They are concrete, they are listed in job adverts, and learning one produces an immediate and legible improvement in employability. Foundational skills produce almost no visible short-term return, which is precisely why people intend to build them and do not.
All three are necessary. You cannot get hired on foundations alone, and nobody advertises for "structured thinking." The error is proportion: spending nearly all developmental effort on the category that expires.
A worked example: ten years of the same effort, two outcomes
Two marketing analysts, both starting in 2016, both putting roughly five hours a week into deliberate learning.
Analyst A spends those hours on tools. Each year, the current platform, the new analytics suite, the automation system everyone is moving to. By 2026 they are proficient in perhaps a dozen tools, four of which are still current. They are hireable, they interview well against job specifications, and each interview is a competition against everyone else who learned the same tools.
Analyst B splits the same five hours. Two hours on whatever tool the job currently requires, enough to be competent rather than expert. Three hours on writing, on statistics, and on understanding how their industry actually makes money.
In year three, A is visibly ahead. They are the person who knows the new system, and that is valuable and recognised.
By year six the gap has closed, because B can now explain results to executives in a way that changes decisions, and can tell which analyses are worth running. Those are not listed on any job specification and they are what gets someone into the room.
By year ten they are in different categories. A is a senior analyst competing on tool proficiency with people ten years younger who learned the current tools more recently. B is doing work that requires judgment, which is harder to hire for and therefore better compensated, and could move into an adjacent industry without starting over, because the writing, the statistics and the commercial understanding all transfer.
Two honest qualifications. A's path is real and respectable, and deep tool expertise is genuinely valuable in fields where the tool is the craft. And B's advantage took six years to become visible, which is a long time to persist with something producing no feedback. That delay is the actual difficulty here, not the reasoning.

Why combinations beat rankings
There is a widely repeated piece of career advice that says to become world class at one thing. For a small number of people in a small number of fields, that is right. For most people it is both unachievable and unnecessary.

It also explains why apparently unfocused backgrounds sometimes outperform. A person who spent four years in one field and then moved to another has a combination, provided they retained the first. The failure mode is abandoning rather than stacking.
How do you tell a durable skill from a fashionable one?
Four tests, applicable before committing real time.
The twenty-year test. Would this have been valuable twenty years ago, and will it plausibly be valuable in twenty more? Clear writing passes at both ends. Any specific platform fails at one end and probably both.
The transfer test. If you changed industry entirely, how much of this comes with you? Skills that survive a domain change are foundational by definition.
The teaching test. Could you explain the principle underneath it, separately from the particular implementation? If the skill is only expressible as steps in a specific interface, it is a tool skill wearing a principle's clothing.
The scope test. Does this become more valuable if you are responsible for more, or does it stop being your job? Skills that stop being your job at the next level are worth having and not worth deepening indefinitely.
A caution about the advice itself. "Learn the fundamentals" is easy to deploy as a reason to avoid learning anything current, which is its own failure. You still need the tools of your field to be employable, and someone who refuses to learn the current platform on the grounds that it will be obsolete in four years will not be employed long enough to enjoy being right. The argument is about proportion, not permission to opt out.
What about the tools that keep changing?
Learn them, quickly, to the level the work requires, and do not over-invest.
The useful mental model is that tool skills are an entry fee rather than an asset. You pay it to be in the game. It does not accumulate.
Two things make the fee cheaper over time, and both are foundational.
First, the underlying concepts recur. Tools within a category share structure, and someone who understands the concepts learns each new instance far faster than someone who memorised the previous interface. The concepts are the compounding part.
Second, learning how to learn is itself a compounding skill. People who have deliberately acquired several skills develop a method, and the method transfers. This is the quiet advantage behind people who seem to pick things up quickly. Usually they have done it enough times to have a process.
So the practical stance on any new tool: learn it properly, note which concepts underneath it are general, and resist the temptation to become the person defined by it.
The problem with skills that pay off in year six

How do you actually build one?
Foundational skills are not learned by studying them directly. They are built by doing work that demands them, with attention.
